The Winemakers

Pegões, established in 1958, is a modern and competitive winery recognised both in domestic and international markets. Pegões wines have been distinguished with several awards at the most important international wine contests.
With a vineyard area of 2.200 acres, they follow a systematic strategy of modernization with the key objective of continuously improving the quality and value of their wines.

The Pegões Terroir is located between two Nature Reserves – the Tagus estuary to the Northwest and the Sado on the Southwest, on the east side of the Arrabida hills and on the west side of the Alentejo province clays. The Pegões region is unique in climate and soil conditions.
The climate is Mediterranean and the soil, named “Pliocenico de Pegões”, is sandy formed over millions of years by sand transported by the rivers Tagus and Sado. It is this climate / soil combination that gives birth to the unique Pegões wines.

On the road again . . . . . .

Hi,

I’ll be spending plenty of quality time bonding with my beloved car over the next three weeks. In addition to visiting my customers on the east and west coasts, I’ll be taking part in wine fairs too. Always great fun !

The next wine fair is with Der O Sullivan in Tralee this coming Friday, the 2nd December. It starts at 7 (ish) and ends at some stage later in the night. Who knows when :) Its always a fantastic event and the who’s who of Tralee and greater Kerry will be there to sample the wines on the night. Der and his team always put on a wonderful show and the delicious home cooked dishes will compliment the lovely wine selection on show from a select few of his wine suppliers.

I have been asked to show the following wines

Kangarilla Road Shiraz 2009

Little Beauty Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Little Beauty Riesling 2009

Little Beauty Pinot Noir 2009

Its always a very lively event with a great crowd so that should be great fun

Hope to see you on my travels

Kevin O Brien tells us all about his Kangarilla Road Chardonnay

In todays video, Kevin O Brien tells us all about his delicious Kangarilla Road chardonnay.

In a recent in-store tasting, I had the pleasure of converting many ABC (anything but chardonnay !) customers over to this delicious example of really well made chardonnay. One lady who initially refused to try it ended up buying 6 bottles for a dinner party. She liked it that much !

Over to you Kevin

The Winemakers

Kangarilla Road Vineyard & Winery is based in McLaren Vale South Australia. It was established by Helen and Kevin O’Brien in 1997. Kangarilla Road is the main road running past the vineyard towards the small village of Kangarilla, the name a derivation of the Australian Aboriginal language and refers to the abundance of resources locally. Our long, dry growing season can often become an “Indian Summer” allowing us to create Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rich in fruity aromas and flavours and balanced nicely in the reds with soft approachable tannins.

Kevin O’Brien is an oenologist with 20 years experience in the wine industry. Helen O’Brien brings flair to Kangarilla Road and has extensive experience in the public relations, promotions and fashion industries.

Our philosophy is really quite simple – to produce wines that we enjoy drinking – wines that can be enjoyed with or without food and with friends.

The Wine

Our Chardonnay is a fresh citrus driven style complemented by the light use of oak with 30% of the wine fermented in new French oak Barriques. This wine was matured for around 100 days in oak with daily barrel stirring. The oak component is unobtrusive yet critical to the overall aroma and flavour texture.

Pale light straw with green hues. Fragrant orange blossom and aromatic limes jump from the glass. Lively citrus and green apple and a creamy mid palate. A long finish reminiscent of lemon sorbet. This is an elegant style displaying tight acidity, great length of flavour together with integrated mid palate texture coming from the use of oak. This wine is to be enjoyed over the next 12 months and will continue to reward for the next 3 – 5 years. Ideal with salads, chicken, cheeses. The 2010 vintage is regarded as being the best since 2006 !

2008 Robert Parker (88 pts)

2008 James Halliday (88 pts)

2008 The Wine Gang (87 pts)
