Year : 2010

Grape Variety : Shiraz

Style : Full, Spicy Red

ABV : 14%

Drink By : 2016

Price : €12 to €14 RRP

The Winemakers

Kangarilla Road Vineyard & Winery is based in McLaren Vale South Australia. It was established by Helen and Kevin O’Brien in 1997. Kangarilla Road is the main road running past the vineyard towards the small village of Kangarilla, the name a derivation of the Australian Aboriginal language and refers to the abundance of resources locally. Our long, dry growing season can often become an “Indian Summer” allowing us to create Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rich in fruity aromas and flavours and balanced nicely in the reds with soft approachable tannins.

Kevin O’Brien is an oenologist with 20 years experience in the wine industry. Helen O’Brien brings flair to Kangarilla Road and has extensive experience in the public relations, promotions and fashion industries.  Our philosophy is really quite simple – to produce wines that we enjoy drinking – wines that can be enjoyed with or without food and with friends.

The Wine

The vineyards of the Southern Fleurieu and Currency Creek contribute colour together with a signature blackberry and spice. The Langhorne Creek vineyards give us depth and texture together with the complex spice, dark plums and cherry always associated with this region. Together the three regions provide depth, complexity and mid palate power.

The colour is dense deep red with purple hues. Aromas of lifted spicy dark fruits of cherry and plum. Great depth of flavour with loads of vibrant juicy black currant and plum. 2010 gave us wonderful natural structure with an abundance of silky tannins complemented with nicely integrated oak resulting in a lingering flavour. Enjoy now over the next 5 years.

Bradleys Off Licence In Store Wine Tasting Friday 16th December

Yes the wine tasting season continues and this Friday the 16th of December, I’ll be in the wonderful Bradleys Off Licence in the North Main Street, the heart of Cork City.

Bradleys have been around for a few years, in fact since 1850. No, thats not a typo. Bradleys have been serving the people of Cork, Munster, Ireland and the World for that long !

No better man than Michael Creedon, proprietor of Bradleys to describe what his wonderful company is all about

“A family business since 1850, Bradleys is a specialist off-licence with a convenience/grocery store attached.

Based on the North Main Street, in the historic centre of Cork city, we pride ourselves in carrying the most extensive range of wines, beers, spirits and liqueurs available in Cork.  That’s right – apart from the brands you expect to find in a quality off-licence, we also carry those you just can’t find anywhere else!   Furthermore, if we don’t stock what you are looking for, we also specialise in sourcing your requests.  Maybe you are looking for a wine for your wedding, or that special bottle for a big occasion.  Possibly a chocolate stout is more to your taste, or an after dinner Limoncello.  Whatever it might be, look no further!

Next time you are in Cork, please feel free to visit us and browse our shelves.  And if you can’t carry it home, nationwide delivery can be arranged. “

We are going to kick off the wine tasting at 5pm and I’ll be pouring a selection of wines. We are starting with the following and will go on from there  . . . . . . . . . .

Beso De Vino Macabeo 2010

Little Beauty Sauvignon Bland 2009

Beso De Vino Seleccion (Syrah / Garnacha) 2009

The Wine

The Devil’s Whiskers are the two little marks that appear around the top lips of some people when they drink red wine – even just one glass. Aromas of spicy black currant, dark prune and sweet earth with nuances of eucalyptus and sweet floral notes integrated with fine French oak. Flavours of savoury black currant and rhubarb, this wine shows great length and texture with fine fruit tannins complimented with carefully integrated oak.

On the road again . . . . . .

Hi,

I’ll be spending plenty of quality time bonding with my beloved car over the next three weeks. In addition to visiting my customers on the east and west coasts, I’ll be taking part in wine fairs too. Always great fun !

The next wine fair is with Der O Sullivan in Tralee this coming Friday, the 2nd December. It starts at 7 (ish) and ends at some stage later in the night. Who knows when :) Its always a fantastic event and the who’s who of Tralee and greater Kerry will be there to sample the wines on the night. Der and his team always put on a wonderful show and the delicious home cooked dishes will compliment the lovely wine selection on show from a select few of his wine suppliers.

I have been asked to show the following wines

Kangarilla Road Shiraz 2009

Little Beauty Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Little Beauty Riesling 2009

Little Beauty Pinot Noir 2009

Its always a very lively event with a great crowd so that should be great fun

Hope to see you on my travels

Our philosophy is really quite simple – to produce wines that we enjoy drinking – wines that can be enjoyed with or without food and with friends.

The Wine

The major percentage of this wine is from our McLaren Flat vineyards. These vineyards located at the northern part of the foothills ripen later than other sub-regions resulting in “cooler climate” spicy aromatic dark berry driven wines with intense mid to back palate presence and an abundance of soft velvety tannins. These wines tend to develop best in French oak, however second and third use American oak also provide great depth. Other components are sourced from both the Blewitt Springs and Seaview areas where soils range from mostly deep sands to red earth on limestone. The resultant wines display spicy bold dark plum characters. The final component is from a vineyard in the Sellicks sub-region which is very close to the sea. Shiraz ripens early here also with very low yields; the wines have herbaceous characters with firm Cabernet like tannins.

Aromas of lifted spicy dark fruits and rose petals. The spiciness ranges from black pepper to allspice with nuances of sweet earthiness. There are lively juicy dark fruits on the mid palate with generous yet approachable silky fruit tannins and integrated oak giving this wine incredible length of flavour.

Grape Variety : 85% Syrah, 15% Garnacha

Style : Warm, Spicy Red

ABV : 13.5 %

The Winemakers

Grandes Vinos y Viñedos S.A. was founded in 1997 and focus on quality, innovation and commitment to the surroundings and the environment and striving for modern, new working systems and better control of all the processes right from the vine stock, creating unique wines with a great character, typical of the region. The Winery and its vineyards are geographically located in the heart of the Cariñena Denominación de Origen, Appellation of Origin, one of Spain’s most traditional wine-producing regions.

The wines are produced based on three fundamental aspects that form the essence of each wine: the land, the climate and the variety. The average age of the vineyard is over 40 years old, with yields of less than 6,000 kgs. per hectare. (2.75 tons/acre)

The Wine

The 2009 Beso de Vino Seleccion is a blend of 85% Syrah (15 yr old vines) and 15% Garnacha (40 yr old vines) aged for 3 months in French oak. Black cherry and blueberry aromas lead to a dense, plush, savory wine which finishes with no hard edges. It is shockingly good for the money. Grandes Vinos y Vinedos’ collection is replete with stunning values.

Jay Miller.

90 POINTS THE WINE ADVOCATE ROBERT PARKER.
